Jason Oberbeck grew up in the Midwest often drawing his favorite comic book and cartoon characters. Funny enough as it sounds, in his junior high year he discovered the Renaissance Masters Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Donatello through the reading of the comic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. From there on Jason became more serious about his talent for art and became a student at Memphis College of Art in the Fall of 1996. There he studied Fine Arts and graduated with a BFA in 2000. After leaving Memphis in 2001, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to work in the sign and advertising industry as a billboard painter. He quickly worked his way up to Art Director in the design department. Simultaneously, Jason was a working fine artist, showing his paintings and prints in galleries, libraries, bars and coffee houses throughout the Bay Area.
Around the end of 2013, Jason left the sign industry to take on the responsibility of raising his son and to use the remainder of his time to focus on his art career. He and his family live in Hayward, CA where Jason is a member of A.R.T. Inc, the Hayward City Arts Council and the Hayward Mural Program.
We are happy to include Jason's work in our Freeze Frame show. Below is a statement about the pieces he did for the show.
